Suggestions for Therapists' Engagement
(from the essay "A Beginner's Beginning," published in its entirety on this site)
"Rule" 1
Be prepared to enter multiple manifestations of gameplay.
There are, we're learning, many ways in each game to connect with a client, following the changing yet specific rules of each manifestation of play in ways that allow for meaningful therapeutic connection through each world's possibilities and boundaries. There are ways, too, in which a client may switch between entire games during a session, so there's a gentle argument to be made for special flexibility and patience when following clients' motives in terms of prepping and adapting to the changing circumstances and rules of engagement.
"Rule" 2
Let the client guide the game.
We've found it's incredibly useful to wait for clients to tell us how and in what ways to engage; to outright ask, as well, explicitly how they would like us to engage. E.g., as active player; witness; collaborator; etc...And to not let our motives overwhelm their processes.
"Rule" 3
Expect Technical Difficulties.
And be prepared to respond calmly and creatively...
